Jia Shin finished sixth in her first senior championship at the Four Continents, reflecting on her performance, lessons learned, and her determination to improve ahead of the Milan-Cortina Olympics. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on MFocus.
After the competition, meeting with reporters in the mixed zone, Jia Shin confessed, “Until yesterday, my mind was really complicated and I was a bit worried about how I would get through my program. But since I still had the free skate left, I tried to forget about it quickly.” She continued, “Even though my condition wasn’t bad during official practice this morning and I was less worried about my jumps, I still made mistakes, which is disappointing. I think I need to work on fixing those mistakes for the next competition.” When asked about the most disappointing and best parts of her performance, she replied, “The most disappointing was the mistake on the triple loop, but I think I did well in trying to express myself more in the step sequence.”
For this competition, Jia Shin switched back to a costume she had worn previously. “I really liked the white dress I wore before, but it felt a bit plain, so I decided to return to this one. I plan to wear this costume for the Olympics as well,” she said. Asked if the color, which is similar to the ice, influenced her decision, she replied, “That might have been part of it.”
This event was Jia Shin’s first senior championship. “Until just before the competition, it felt a bit surreal to be at the Four Continents. My first championship was really tough and I was very nervous, but I tried hard to overcome it,” she said. Given her good practice sessions, the results may have been disappointing, but when asked what she learned, she answered, “I was very nervous in the short program, but even when things don’t go well, I learned how to collect myself and approach the next competition. I learned a lot about how to calm myself and be less nervous.” When asked how she would remember this event, she said, “I was so happy to compete with so many Team Korea athletes at my first Four Continents, and although the results were disappointing, I think it will be a memorable stage.”
Jia Shin’s next stage is the 2026 Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympics in February. She shared her mindset for Olympic preparation: “With the Olympics just around the corner, I need to find areas to improve based on this competition and prepare more solidly. I also realized I need to become mentally stronger.” Looking ahead to the Olympic competition, she said, “I think I need to make my performance bigger and more powerful so I can stand out.” Regarding her mental preparation, she added, “I usually do a lot of self mind-control, so I’ll keep doing image training and try to stay focused.” When asked how she wants to remember the Olympics, she said, “I hope it ends as a really good memory, and I hope I can show a lot of good performances at these Olympics.”
