Alexandra Trusova, 2022 Olympic silver medalist, shared that the Olympics was the least nerve-wracking competition of her career and reflected on her performances in Beijing. Here’s a translation of her comments.

Q: Were you very anxious at the Olympic Games?

Alexandra Trusova: The Olympics was the least nerve-wracking competition of my entire career. Especially the short program – I wasn’t nervous at all for the short. I just had a huge desire to get on the ice as soon as possible and skate quickly. I wanted to be on that ice. When you spend your whole life thinking this is your ultimate goal, you realize it’s finally here – and you just want to go out there. The short program at the Olympics was one of the few times I truly enjoyed myself.

The free skate was more complicated – not that I was very nervous, but I was more anxious than for the short, because a lot had to come together for me to land those five quads. For me – and apparently for Ilia Malinin as well – I needed a lot of concentration and good health. That’s why I was more nervous.

Compared to other competitions in the Olympic season – even the free skate wasn’t nerve-wracking.

Q: If you could go back to one of your performances, knowing everything that would happen, would you skate the same or take a risk and change something during your program?

Alexandra Trusova: I think people always ask this about the Olympics. I took as many risks as possible in all my performances, so I doubt I could have done more.

But less – I’ve answered many times that at the Olympics, right before my last quad, I had the thought: I’ve landed four, maybe that’s enough. If I go for the fifth and miss, it could cost me first place.

But five wasn’t enough. So, thank God I decided I’d never forgive myself if I didn’t try, and I went for the fifth quad. In all other competitions, I never even considered changing anything.

Q: If you met yourself in 2022, what would you say before or after your performance?

Alexandra Trusova: I don’t know what I’d say. I’m satisfied with everything – just as it was. So I don’t know what I’d say.”
