Alexandra Trusova, the 2022 Olympic silver medalist from Russia, criticized the rule changes in figure skating, including the reduction of jumps in the free program. Here’s a translation of her comments.

“With every new rule, figure skating becomes easier, and more people can achieve certain results without really possessing any unique qualities. Everyone has their own [unique quality].

I believe this is a sport – though I’ll probably get hate for saying it again. The slogan of sport is ‘faster, higher, stronger.’ Many say it’s an art, and yes, I agree, it’s about being able to combine everything, but you must not forget that it’s a sport. Otherwise, you could train once a week, skate beautifully, and win. That seems strange to me. For me, sport is about pushing the limits of human capability,” Trusova said in a Q&A video on her VKontakte page.

As Sasha returns to competing it will be interesting to see if she attempts to add transitions and improve skating skills or still only relies on jump jump jump. Is she now able to have maturity in thinking to understand the true difficulty and complexity when a skater can do both?

Interesting that she felt that way as the Quad Queen, a overwhelming jumping machine that caused her to medal but there were no artistry, no storytelling and no audience to engage but just applauded for quads that require strength and endurance, but the ISU rules and regulations to change technical elements to presentation and composition and skating skills with transitions and flow of the interpretation of the music than jump, jump and jum: and that should not make a contender a winner without the full package: athleticism and artistry combined
