Olympic champion Fedor Klimov shared his opinion on ultra-C elements in pair skating. Here’s a translation of his comments.
“Q: What do you think about increasing the difficulty for pairs? Dima Kozlovskii and Sasha Boikova are doing a quad throw, but it’s not worth that much in points. Its execution doesn’t help you achieve your goals as much.
Fedor Klimov: I told the ISU many years ago: “Raise the value of quad twists, quad throws. It’s time! People will start doing them, people are ready.” They don’t do it because of safety concerns. They say, “You start doing them, and then we’ll raise the [points] if we see you’re all doing them without injuries.” But no one starts doing them because it’s not profitable. It’s a vicious circle.
At this year’s World Championships, there was another meeting, and we talked about this again. Dmitri Savin, for example, also supported raising the scores. I don’t know if they’ll consider it or not. But this is what moves the sport forward. And it’s great that Sasha and Dima are doing it. It should be encouraged, even just the risk itself.”
