Eteri Tutberidze discussed the significant role parents play in raising figure skating champions, highlighting the sacrifices and dedication often required. Here’s a translation of their comments.
“As for parents realizing their dreams through their children – well, why not?
Lipnitskaya’s mother devoted her life so that Yulia Lipnitskaya could succeed. Did she succeed? She did. The same goes for Evgenia Medvedeva’s family. Her grandmother lived at the rink. They sold their apartment and moved to live near the rink. The same with Alina Zagitova. Did the parents make a mistake? They raised champions.
Maybe there aren’t that many complete families. The mothers who sit here from morning till night miss out on family life. In the end, they are left with their daughter.
And again, I have yet to meet a successful athlete, an Olympic champion, who has said: ‘Mom, thank you so much for giving up everything you had, for sitting in the stands your whole life, for missing out on your own happiness as a woman and in life.’ But that parent succeeded as a parent,” Tutberidze said in the series “The Tutberidze Method” on Okko.
