Kazuki Tomono delivered a strong, confidence-boosting short program performance at Skate Canada, earning second place and his season-best score of 92.07 as he heads into the free skate. Here’s a translation of his comments posted on Nikkansports.
Tomono executed a quad-triple toe loop combination, earning a positive grade of execution (GOE) of 2.17 points. Although his quadruple Salchow received a slight score deduction, he successfully landed his third jump, a triple axel, and posted his season-best score to date.
Reflecting on his skate, Tomono admitted to initial worries: “It’s a score that connects me to the next step, and as for the performance… Honestly, the schedule was a bit long. I mean, really, I was unusually nervous – like, seriously nervous. But I managed to calm myself down before the performance. Leading up to it, even in my daily life, like when going to bed, my mind was spinning with anxiety.
That said, I think my training ultimately came through in my performance. There were a couple of jumps where I had to hang on, and I thought, ‘I guess the score might not be great.’ But scoring over 90 points despite everything is such a huge confidence boost for me.”
