Mone Chiba (20) secured her first Grand Prix victory at Skate Canada with a season-best performance Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Nikkansports.

In her post-skate interview, Chiba said, “I’m happy I was able to stay calm and perform my best today.” However, she admitted, “I still can’t quite believe that I’ve won.” Overcoming the nerves that made her feel “dizzy,” she skated with poise and brought her program to life.

Last season, Chiba began her Grand Prix series with a silver medal at the NHK Trophy, followed by another second-place result at the Cup of China, which earned her a spot at the Grand Prix Final.

During the short program, Chiba delivered a strong performance, earning 72.29 points, just 1.15 points shy of her personal best. Though she acknowledged that “the height on two of the three jumps wasn’t enough,” she still performed well enough to take the lead. The 20-year-old, who won bronze at last season’s World Championships, went on to deliver a stunning free skate, completing her redemption arc after slipping from first to second place last season at the Cup of China.

Chiba will next compete at the sixth Grand Prix event, the Finland Grand Prix, from November 21 to 23 in Helsinki. She is aiming for her second consecutive appearance at the Grand Prix Final. Reflecting on her triumph at Skate Canada, Chiba said, “While I’ll savor today’s victory, I also want to identify the areas that need improvement and work on them.” Her steady preparation and focus signal her determination to continue building on her success as she approaches the next competition.
