Czech ice dancers Katerina and Daniel Mrazek are set to compete at Skate Canada, debuting new routines for this Grand Prix season with bold music choices and refined performances following feedback at the Lombardia Trophy. Here’s a translation of their comments.
Unlike their more experienced teamates, Natalie and Filip Taschler, the Mrazeks remain training under Matteo Zanni and Barbora Reznickova in Egna, Italy. For their rhythm dance, the pair opted for music from the prescribed period of the 1990s and ultimately decided on classic rock tracks by AC/DC.
“This is a bit different from the programs we’ve performed in recent years, but we chose it because it suits us. We wanted some rock music, but finding tracks that fit well together and crafting them into an enjoyable program was challenging,” the Czech dancers explained.
For their free dance, the pair selected Malaguena by Ernesto Lecuona, a piece more in line with their usual style. Just as in their tango rhythm dance from the 2022–2023 season, Katerina will be competing in a long skirt. While the length adds aesthetic appeal, it also carries risks, as demonstrated three years ago during the Junior Grand Prix Final, where the duo tripped over the skirt and fell on the ice.
“A lot of people think it’s a big risk,” acknowledged Katerina, “but I believe the skirt is effective for this music, and the risk is worth it. It’s harder than wearing a short skirt because the long one is heavier; when I spin, it throws me off balance. Sometimes it gets stuck, or even gets in Dan’s way. That’s why we train with it every day, and the practice skirt has to be the same length as the competition one – very centimeter matters,” Katerina added.
The Mrazeks kicked off their season in mid-September at Lombardia Trophy in Bergamo, where they placed second behind the American duo Eva Pate and Logan Bye. The competition provided valuable feedback from the judges on their new programs. “The technical panel pointed out some things we need to be mindful of, and there were elements we had to adjust. But that’s completely normal for the season’s first event,” noted Daniel.
