Yuma Kagiyama (21) commented on the upcoming NHK Trophy, his preparation and quad lutz. Here’s a translation of his comments posted on Nikkansports.

“I’ve been in great condition both yesterday and today, so I’m really excited about the competition itself,” he told. “It’s the fourth event of the series but my first one, so having watched the first three events of this Grand Prix, I’ve seen some highly competitive performances. There are various skaters gathered for the NHK Trophy, so I’m really looking forward to skating with everyone. I am hoping I can bring this good condition into the competition, so first, I want to do well in tomorrow’s short program.”

“Overall, I pay close attention to how I manage my body after daily practices, including my diet and other aspects of life outside skating, and that’s the first area where things are going well,” Yuma explained. “Also, since coming here, the condition during practice has been very good; today I landed my flips and jumps during music run-through cleanly, so I hope I can keep this same feeling into tomorrow.”

He practiced in the new costume and explained, “Since we plan to use a new costume for the short program from this event, today I practiced in it to check the comfort of movement in the costume and get into the mindset for the actual performance.”

Speaking of his goals for this competitions, Yuma told: “I competed in the Lombardia Trophy and the West Collegiate Championships, aiming for scores like 200 or a total of 300, but I couldn’t reach those. Initially, I wasn’t able to skate as I hoped, but starting from the NHK Trophy, I’m aiming for 100 in the short and 200 in the free, and of course, my personal best. I’ve been doing the same content each year for the short, but the program itself is new, so I hope to discover a new side of myself.”

Upon spotting officials in the stands, he also attempted the quadruple lutz, a jump he aims to master. Although he fell on his first attempt, he successfully landed the second, expressing a desire to show that “I have the ambition to include a quadruple lutz in future competitions.”

“Of course, I am aiming for the best result. However, rather than focusing solely on that, if I can properly execute everything per my practices, I believe the results will follow, so first and foremost, I want to trust myself and enjoy the process,” he told.
