Russian pair skaters Aleksandra Boikova and Dmitrii Kozlovsky expressed their frustration over Russia’s absence from the Milan Olympics, emphasizing their competitive strength and the key contributions of Russian coaching to pair skating internationally. Here’s a translation.
“Q: How would you evaluate international pair skating at the moment?
Kozlovskii: We believe that at least three competitive pairs are missing from the lineup.
Q: How significant is the influence of Russian figure skating on the international scene?
Kozlovskii: It’s necessary to think not in terms of “Russian figure skating” or any other country but rather about the athletes themselves who are present at competitions.
We must recognize that Russian skaters have historically made a tremendous contribution to the development of pair skating. Then there were exceptional athletes like the German pair, or rather, one incredible skater – Aliona Savchenko – and a Chinese pair.
Our sport is highly individual, and everything depends on the athletes competing or not competing in a tournament. Right now, we believe we are very competitive on the international stage and, of course, should have been at the Milan Olympics. Unfortunately, what is happening is a complete injustice.
Q: Are there enough foreign experts to maintain a high level internationally? Can they compete with Russian athletes?
Kozlovskii: The best specialists in pair skating are in Russia.
Boikova: Many international pairs train in Russia, and we shouldn’t forget that.”
On watching pair skating at the Milan Olympics:
“Q: Will you be watching pair skating at the Olympics?
Boikova and Kozlovskii: Of course.
Q: What are your priorities? Who will you be cheering for?
Boikova: Our priority is to cheer for ourselves – for our return to international competition.
Kozlovskii: Yes, I think that’s the most important. We do have friends competing there, of course, and we wish them the best, smooth ice, and good performances. But ultimately, we are looking forward to returning to the international stage so that the discipline can be as fair and complete as possible.”
