Irina Rodnina, three-time Olympic champion and head of the Moscow Region Figure Skating Federation, commented on Alexander Plushenko’s transfer to Azerbaijan, noting that athlete transfers are not unusual and referencing Diana Davis as another example. Here’s a translation of her comment.

“Regarding Sasha Plushenko, our federation received a request for his transfer to another national team and for the termination of the benefits he received as an athlete. The decision on the transfer was made specifically by the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR), although we also expressed our opinion. It was a collegial decision, and you can find it on our federation’s website.

Is Russia losing a talented skater? I don’t understand why people always talk about loss in such cases. We have never stopped the migration of people, either at the national level or in sports. In this situation, the decision was made by his parents, who are responsible for him.

Why is everyone so focused on Sasha Plushenko? Tutberidze’s daughter (Diana Davis) has represented all sorts of countries. I haven’t seen any outrage from our fans or journalists about her transfers. She competes for another country and even has three citizenships. So much for patriotic upbringing and moral character,” Rodnina said.

Because to the best of my knowledge, Eteri never badmouthed Russian athletes who changed federations or called them traitors?
