Georgian figure skaters Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava, who compete as a pair, shared their emotions after finishing second at the World Championships in Prague. Here’s a translation of their comments.

Metelkina and Berulava scored a total of 218.41 points, finishing behind Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin of Germany (228.33). Third place went to Canadians Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud (216.09).

Berulava: We are incredibly happy to have won our first World Championship medal. Of course, we wanted gold, but thank God for this as well. We made mistakes – and we’re grateful to still be on the podium.

Q: Would you say you won silver or lost gold?

Berulava: We lost gold.

Metelkina: Yes, it’s more like we lost gold.

Q: Did you cry after this?

Metelkina: Not because we lost or because of mistakes. It’s just the accumulated fatigue from the season – I realized the season was ending. I knew I would cry after the free skate because it’s so hard to hold yourself together mentally and physically, and you keep it together until the very end. So, of course, emotions are coming out now – that’s normal.

Q: Usually, at the end of the free skate, Luka is the one lying on the ice in a star pose. Today it was Nastya. Was that also due to emotional exhaustion?

Metelkina: Yes. But for Luka, the Olympics wasn’t his first experience; for me, it was. And four more programs – it’s been a very emotional season. We won Europeans, and had some good results at the start of the season. So many emotions have built up, and you have to hold on until the very end and not give up. So, of course, emotions are coming out now.

Q: What’s next?

Berulava: For two months, I’m going to forget what figure skating is. I’ll rest, recover, and get ready for next season.

Metelkina: Yes, I’ll be recovering too. But first, we’ll go to Georgia for some personal matters. Then we’ll go on vacation, and after that, we’ll start thinking about figure skating again.”
