On the February 9th, official practice took place at the rink adjacent to the competition venue, where Kao Miura trained in the fourth group. He started practice with tape wrapped around the upper part of his right skate boot. During the run-through of his short program, he struggled with the landing on his opening quadruple salchow, landed the subsequent triple axel, and under-rotated the salchow in the second half. He repeatedly checked his jumps throughout practice. In interviews afterward, he revealed that the outside of his right skate boot “broke” during practice on the 8th. Here’s a translation of his comments.
“I’ve taken the best measures I can right now. First, I’m trying not to worry about it too much, or rather, I’m trying not to think about what happened so I can perform well.”
He has experienced boot breakages several times before, but has always repaired and continued using them. This is the first time it has happened during an overseas trip. While calling it “unexpected,” he inserted three layers of hard material into the outside of the boot and secured it with several types of tape. To check the feel, he repeatedly jumped during practice.
