Evgenia Medvedeva: “Every year it’s more and more difficult to force yourself to do technically difficult things”
Evgenia Medvedeva about motivation for participation in shows, fear of jumps that athletes start to have and work with Eteri Tutberidze.
About shows
Evgenia Medvedeva: I find motivation in diversity. For me, this is extremely interesting, because preparing for competitions, world championships is, of course, very very cool, but when you have been doing this for 18 years …
Yes, perhaps the training plan is changing, jumps are changing, and they become more and more difficult, and more and more concentration is needed… And somehow all days start to look the same. And you do like this for years.
And now something absolutely phenomenal for me personally is happening. My brains don’t always get it: “What do you mean? How is it possible – first, skate in a pair and secondly, with a non-professional.”
I’m still wild to do figure skating, just now my figure skating diverges from one river into small streams.
About fear
Evgenia Medvedeva: In figure skating, when you are small, nothing is scary at all. The older you get, the brighter the instinct of self-preservation plays. And not only for me. All the girls with whom I spoke, who have already ended their careers a long time ago or just recently or overcoming themselves now, go and learn some new ultra-c or maintain triple jumps.
The older you get, the more difficult it is morally. That’s how it’s in figure skating.
What is the reason for this?
Evgenia Medvedeva: Nobody knows.
It would seem that you already have a habit, you did these jumps 100 times.
Evgenia Medvedeva: Yes, but every year it is morally more and more difficult to force yourself to do technically difficult things … Well, let’s be honest: ice, skates, blades are dangerous elements.
About Eteri Tutberidze
For sure Eteri Georgievna have contributed a lot to you, we all see it. In our opinion, she is the best figure skating coach in the world. Did she often notice everything (on the ice)? Did it concern only professional things or human things too?
Evgenia Medvedeva: More often professional, of course. After all, we spent more time communicating on the ice, during work. But, I think, there is such an experience of remarking even small things – “lie a little here”, “lie a little there” …
They said to do ten jumps, and you come and say: “I did it.” But in fact you did seven. And she notices all this. How? We still don’t know. So, I think that this skill comes in handy in life.
