Yuma Kagiyama, who is in second place after the men’s short program, practiced on the sub-rink in preparation for the free skate on the February 13th. Here’s a translation of his comments.

“I want to do what I need to do with full confidence and give it my all.”

While Malinin (USA), who leads by 5.09 points, landed the ultra-difficult quad axe to thunderous applause from the audience, Kagiyama kept his focus on himself, not looking over. “I’m not doing anything special; I’ll just skate as myself, as usual,” he said. He landed several quadruple flips, a jump he’s including for the first time this season, and carefully checked the flow and quality of his jumps and skating.

“I want to skate as if this is my reward time. I want to perform with so much feeling that I can show every emotion on my face.” Kagiyama is ready to pour everything into his four-minute program.

For the free skate, Kagiyama revealed he will wear a new costume. When asked about its design, he smiled and said, “It’s a secret.” He added, “I want it to feel more glamorous, more gorgeous.” As for the first reveal, he said, “I think it’s best to wear it for the first time in the actual competition.” Skating to “Turandot” in Italy, he expressed his determination: “I want to perform in a way that makes me feel happy, to be radiant, and to finish with my head held high and a smile.”
