In a conversation with Sports correspondent Maya Bagriantseva, Niina Petrokina shared how victory at the Europeans has impacted her and reflected o her performance in the short program at Worlds. Here’s a translation.

The Estonian figure skater placed 13th in the short program at the World Championships in Boston, scoring 65.58 points. Earlier this season, Petrokina won the European Championships.

“It was very important for me to skate clean today — I understand that, after winning the European Championships, there’s a lot of attention on me. Of course, the competition here is tough, but I’m happy to have the chance to compete, and I’m happy to be at the World Championships.

For the free skate, I’ll try to avoid tightening up and skate more relaxed. To help with that, I plan to get a good night’s sleep tomorrow — I’m still struggling a bit with jet lag.

I’ve already started thinking about next season’s programs. I’ll probably change just one and keep one from this season.

After winning the European Championships, things weren’t easy — I’ve never experienced so much attention in my life. There were so many interviews, podcasts, and official events. In February, I also had a competition in Milan, but I had almost no time to prepare for it because I was so busy with media activities.

But I realized right away that I needed to focus less on what’s happening around me and less on myself. I haven’t changed at all; I’m still the same open and cheerful Niina, I still love having fun with friends and chatting with my family. Yes, I had a meeting with the president, and I was surprised to learn that he now follows me on social media but that doesn’t change anything about my life.

Before the World Championships, I worked with more focus on preparation, although I’ll admit that I still feel a sense of emptiness inside. Obviously, winning the gold at the European Championships was a big deal, but I want to relearn how to focus on daily work. After all, I’m a professional athlete, and that’s my job,” said Petrokina, as quoted by Sports correspondent Maya Bagriantseva.
