In the fourth episode of the series “Tutberidze Method” Eteri Tutberidze discussed the importance of weight control in figure skating. Here’s a translation of her comments.

“Skaters’ muscles hurt, they can get micro-injuries, and they want to eat in the evening -especially before bed. This is something each person has to go through themselves, because it’s really necessary here. Because first comes figure skating, without which you can’t see yourself. And only then – you.

When I had a problem with weight, I would gnaw on a crust of black bread all day. I don’t know, maybe I became psychologically unwell because of it. Maybe if I had been body positive, I would have been much healthier.

If you gain weight, it leads to loss of coordination, and many other things… including injuries. There will be metatarsal fractures, which are very common at this age. Why? Because they land with under-rotations, and the foot isn’t made of reinforced concrete. Naturally, these metatarsal bones break.

In what sport, besides sumo, is being overweight acceptable? In what sport is it normal? In track and field? In which one? Why did people suddenly say ‘it’s normal’ for us? No, it leads to injuries,” Tutberidze said.

This is crazy to say with the long history of injuries in the skaters who train in the Tutberitze system. What is a very slim weight for other skaters is in ‘overweight’ category for Eteri. She passes her psychological obsession and puts it on young girls, is abuse

  2. Real22 says:

Eteri you can name names who said it was normal for you guys?
Don’t worry we won’t attack them hahaha.

  3. Real22 says:

I understand why in Russia it’s not acceptable in figure skating you guys don’t want to deal with the what ifs and extra injuries so I agree that view from the Russian perspective should be respected.
I just think people outside of Russia have a different approach and that should also be accepted.
