Three-time Olympic champion Irina Rodnina believes that the success of American figure skater Alysa Liu would have been impossible without Russian skaters. Here’s a translation of her comments.

“Liu’s success would not have been possible without Russian figure skaters. After all, as a junior, she competed against them and performed ultra-c elements because our skaters were doing them too.

Then all our skaters were suspended from major competitions. This also affected her career in a certain way. Maybe it even added motivation and confidence that winning Olympic and World Championship gold was now truly possible. But in any case, she deserved all of it,” Rodnina said.

    We never said otherwise lol.

And the Russian skating successes of the past 15 years wouldn’t have been possible without Asian ladies like Mao and Yuna Satoko and Shizuka, because they were winning everything in the 00s and so pushed everyone else to up their game. And their successes wouldn’t have been possible without American ladies like Michelle, Tara, Nancy and Kristi before that. And their successes wouldn’t have been possible without whoever was top before that. The point is competition keeps progress going.

There was a Russian skater there, Adeliia Petrosian! Your national three time champion. Yet she came 6th.
