Eteri Tutberidze shared her feelings about her daughter Diana Davis living far away to pursue her ice dance career, expressing both concern and admiration for her independence and resilience. Here’s a translation of her comment.
“Diana has been living away from me for seven years now. She and her partner decided that there weren’t good coaches here [in Russia], so I had to accept it. Of course, it’s hard. But when I went to America myself, I used to communicate with my mother by fax, whereas now we’re always in touch by video call.
All the decisions that have been made were Diana’s and her husband’s. When they decided to move to Montreal, I kept getting messages: ‘Montreal,’ ‘Montreal,’ ‘Montreal.’ She knows how to stand her ground. All I can do is support and accept.
She’s already 23, and has accumulated a lot of injuries. At some point, I said to her, ‘Maybe it’s time to stop?’ And she replied, ‘Mom, everyone hurts.’ In many ways, she’s stronger than me. Though in everyday life, I still handle a lot. Sometimes I wonder if they could even buy tickets themselves. You have to plan everything, choose the right flights, make sure you don’t miss the next one,” Tutberidze said on the podcast show “Forum in the Big City.”
