“How can they not explain why? We have the right to know it. Otherwise, it looks like a crime. Tell us the reason – and we won’t do it anymore.” Tarasova calls on ISU to explain the reason for denying Russian figure skaters neutral status

The International Skating Union (ISU) granted neutral status to two Russian singles skaters, allowing them to participate in the Olympic qualification for the 2026 Olympics. However, it denied entry to pairs and ice dance duos. Here’s a translation of Tatiana Tarasova’s comment.

“ISU is an organization that has the power to make such a heavy-handed decision affecting real people and athletes — athletes who grew up in our country and have graced ISU competitions with their presence. I firmly believe they are obligated to answer our questions regarding this decision, which is incomprehensible to us.

Tell us the reason — and we won’t do it anymore. But what about the coaches, who, as a result, seem to have been working in vain for several years? If you were fired, wouldn’t you want to know the reason why? If the ISU is so powerful, then they must provide an explanation.

Perhaps they haven’t even articulated a reason for themselves — they suspended our athletes first and only started thinking about justification afterward. After all, the entire council voted and made a deeply consequential decision concerning young athletes.

How can they not explain why? In my opinion, the ISU is obligated to state the reason. We have the right to know it. Otherwise, it looks like a crime,” said Tatiana Tarasova.

To tabac: it’s ‘convenient’ for ISU not to give explanation for banning some of the skaters. Such that these skaters are not able to protect themselves. How would you feel, when, one day, some ruling body put you in jail without any explanation saying it’s not a human right to be free and participate in the social life? If you allow this to happen to people you don’t like, one day this might also happen to you/ people you like. I think it’s fair and necessary to demand proper explanation for the ban. It’s not about gaining sympathy, but about accountability for the decision makers.

Mr / Ms NO WAR , Competitive Sports is not a right- its a privilege. ISU is not violating any law even if they do not state publicly the reason for disqualification. They are not bound to. If they were, the offended party can just sue the ISU to compel the release of their decision. But of course, Tarasova & Stepanova/Bukin know this. They know that if they will be embarassed publicly if people knew the real reason. So Tarasova and the ice dance team are just content to take snipes and jabs at the ISU inorder to gain sympathy from the public. Its not working.

To Carolina: Criteria have been posted by ISU, correct. But it is not explained which criteria were/was broken by which action for each non-eligible skater. If your government arrests and put you in jail stating you broke the Law, I am sure, you would like to know which paragraph of the Law was broken by which action of yours. It is, kind of, human right to get such an explanation. Unless, you are a rasist thinking that being a Russian is a crime in itself.

  5. Carolina says:

ISU already gave reasons. All anyone must do is read criteria they posted publicly in the Communication about how to be eligible for qualification. These skaters they decide to put forward clearly not eligible for publicly demonstrated and documented actions.

To Dominique: You are full of emotions. That’s how propaganda works. If what you are writing is correct, ISU should state it as a reason(s) in the decision document. (Oh, ISU does not want to do it because they were drinking champagne with Putin themselves…?)

  7. Dominique says:

Oh, this Russian manipulations again. The truth is, Tatiana Tarasova, you know perfectly well but you are playing stupid, because in your sick mind you still hope it will gain you something. I will tell you, although I am not ISU. Both your pairs are open admirers of Putin. They openly state how honoured they are by seeing him, meeting him and talking to him. They do not only drink champagne with him, they ask for autographs and are happy to pose on photographs with the war criminal. Zhulin, one of the coaches your whining like a baby for, goes even further – there are several statements documented where he hopes “Ukraine will be defeted and incorporated into Russia soon”. In fact, none of you should be admitted to anything untill you leave Ukraine and pay for your wrongdoings. You are all benefitting from blood money. Hold you within your own borders, your army and your figure skaters. Enough is enough!
