In in interview posted on Mainichi, Shoma Uno (27) reflects on his journey after retirement and his first ice show production. Here’s a translation of his comments.
“Initially, I wasn’t really sure how confidently I could call myself a producer. There were unfamiliar aspects at first, but gradually, I realized that I need to approach my words and actions with confidence,” Uno said.
His aim for this show is to balance his roles as both a performer and a producer. To promote the show, Uno has been traveling to various locations and engaging in PR activities himself.
“There have been several nights recently when I couldn’t sleep because I was so busy,” he said with a wry smile.
“If the ice show turns out unfinished or low quality, it will be entirely my responsibility. At the same time, improving it is something only I can do right now. Each day, I think about schedules — what rehearsals need to happen, what tasks are the most important, and what I need to focus on the most. It’s been a very thoughtful journey.”
This May marked one year since Uno’s retirement press conference. “It’s like I’ve become a new hire. At first, it was really tough,” Uno admitted, acknowledging how his lifestyle has drastically shifted from his competitive days. However, he also feels he has undergone personal growth during this new chapter.
“I have more room for myself now compared to when I was an active competitor. I’ve naturally become better at observing and understanding the world around me,” he remarked.
During this time, Uno has also taken on roles such as television commentator, saying with a smile, “I’ve been learning every day thanks to these experiences.”
Currently, he is devoting all of his energy to ensuring the success of what he calls his “first and last attempt at producing.”
