Shoma Uno (26) appeared on the TBS show “Sunday’s Hatsumimi Academy” aired on the October 6th. He spoke about his decision to retire from competitive sport. Here’s translation of his comment.
When asked about his reasons for retiring, Shoma Uno revealed, “In the last two years, there were moments when I felt I could no longer engage with the same intensity I had before in my skating career.” He confessed that he couldn’t put as much passion into figure skating as he used to. The retirement of skaters like Yuzuru Hanyu and Nathan Chen two years ago were significant influences, and Uno explained, “My biggest motivation was to become a skater who could compete against such athletes.”
He also revealed the advice he received from fellow professional figure skater Mao Asada (34) when he asked her about retiring.
When a host asked, “Did you consult with anyone?” Uno responded, “I generally make decisions on my own, and I make all the decisions by myself.”
However, he disclosed, “I did consult Mao Asada once about how to approach skating going forward.” He recalled that during the consultation, Asada advised, “I think you should choose the path you want to pursue yourself. Even after retiring from figure skating, there are many things you can do.”
Uno expressed his gratitude for this advice, saying, “Hearing this from Mao Asada, who has carried a great deal of pressure throughout her career, really relieved my mind significantly.”
Now retired, Uno expressed an interest in trying his hand as a figure skating commentator, saying, “I’d like to try it once. I want to speak freely rather than stick strictly to norms. I’ll probably do it my way and then disappear after one go,” he joked.
