“Q: Do you have any dietary restrictions, or are you finally allowing yourself everything you’ve wanted for a long time?
Elizaveta TUktamysheva: No, there are no restrictions. I eat everything absolutely calmly now. Weight gain after reducing loads happens to those athletes who restricted themselves and maintained their shape for the sake of one competition. I went through puberty a long time ago, and for the last three or four years, I’ve been in more or less the same condition. This wouldn’t have been possible with a strict diet and restrictions. When you restrict yourself, there are always these swings: you gain weight, then lose weight for competitions, then gain weight again, and lose weight again. But in recent years, I felt well with regular nutrition, without restricting myself in anything. I just ate as much as I needed to satisfy my hunger. If I satisfied that need, I stopped eating. So, I ate in small portions – that was the key to being in good shape for me.
Q: So, you never had to restrain yourself for the sake of sports, career, or achievements?
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva: When I restrained myself, I started gaining weight. The more I restricted myself, the more my brain couldn’t accept it. I’m a hedonist in life: if something is forbidden to me, I want it even more. There’s internal dissonance and destabilization. When I realized this, I think at twenty-one, I just sent everything to hell, said, ‘That’s it, I’m going to live the way I need to, the way I feel.’ And everything started to fall into place.
Q: What is Lisa Tuktamysheva afraid of?
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva: I’m probably afraid of getting stuck in development and not trying to move forward, not learning something new. The thirst for knowledge is probably the key moment for me now. And I’m afraid that I won’t be able to use this time correctly and direct the energy where it’s needed. It’s such an important moment in my personal development right now: to understand what else I can do besides figure skating. The fear, probably, like all athletes, is that when you finish sports — what now? This time needs to be used correctly. There is fear, probably, to use it incorrectly.”
