Niina Petrokina: “For me, the first jump is very crucial. If it works out, it’s easier afterward, but it just didn’t happen. After that, I felt like someone stole my body and that I couldn’t control it.”

Here’s a translation of Estonian single skater Niina Petrokina’s comments about her performance at the 2024 World Championships.

Niina Petrokina secured the 16th place in the women’s singles at the World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal made in the interview with ERR.

“I was ready for the competitions, I skated cleanly in practice, but maybe I didn’t leave enough time for preparation. Physically, I was ready, but perhaps, morally, I lacked something,” the skater told ERR.

“The six-minute warm-up went very well, but after that, I had to wait for a long time. By the time I got to start, my legs were already a bit tired. But it isn’t a big problem, I can handle it. I went into the first jump and actually, for me, the first jump is very, very crucial. If it works out, it is easier afterward, but it just didn’t happen. Completely by accident, I didn’t think I could make such a mistake,” she explained. “After that, I felt like someone stole my body and that I couldn’t control it.”

“I did my best. For me, the most important thing is that I didn’t pop any jumps. I did everything the way I should have, just didn’t get that push like I usually do and hence, the jump wasn’t as good and powerful.”

“Every competition is an experience and this free skate was also an experience. I wanted to skate it. I had a new beautiful dress that I really, really like,” she said.

“I really wanted to show myself and when I want something very, very much, it doesn’t turn out the way I want it to. I need to take these competitions more calmly.”

“When the adrenaline is flowing, you don’t feel any pain. I didn’t think about that leg at all,” added the skater about skating after having a shin bone fracture in December.

“A new season, new routines, new jumps,” Petrokina described her plans. “Of course, healing. To completely recover my leg, and then try some harder jumps.”
