Korean figure skating prodigy Shin Jia (15) has unveiled her new program music.
Management company All That Sports representing the “rising star of figure skating,” Shin Jia, has revealed the new short and free program music that she will present in the upcoming 2023/24 season.
Having won consecutive silver medals at the 2022 and 2023 ISU Figure Skating World Junior Championships, Shin Jia has chosen the waltz song “Fascination” for her new short program and the song “Not About Angels” by British singer Birdy for her new free program. Both programs were choreographed by renowned choreographer David Wilson from Canada, well known for his work with “Figure skating Queen” Kim Yuna.
Shin Jia’s short program music, “Fascination,” is a waltz piece composed by Italian composer Fermo Dante Marchetti in 1904, representing the belle époque era. It features elegant melodies that exude a lovely and pure atmosphere. To us, it is a familiar piece, also known as the theme song from the movie “Love in the Afternoon,” starring Audrey Hepburn. As for her free program music, “Not About Angels,” it is an insert song from the movie “The Fault in Our Stars,” beautifully combining poignant lyrics and melody, expressing hope in love even amidst hardships and adversities, and it is sung by the artist Birdy with her heartfelt voice. This marks the first time for Shin Jia to collaborate with overseas choreographers to create her programs.
Through her management company, All That Sports, Shin Jia expressed her satisfaction with working with an overseas choreographer for the first time this season. She initially had concerns about potential communication difficulties, but to her surprise, the physical expression aspect of the work allowed for smooth communication with David Wilson. She mentioned that the collaboration progressed seamlessly.
Shin Jia described her short program, “Fascination,” as a beautiful waltz program, where she made efforts to synchronize the choreographed elements with the rhythm of the music. For her free program, which features the insert song from the emotional movie “The Fault in Our Stars,” her choreographer emphasized seeing hope beyond sadness. She likes the double axel landing and choreo elements perfectly matching the music, which brings great anticipation for her programs.
Shin Jia is preparing for the upcoming season through intensive training in Japan, which is her training base. In April of last year, she left for Japan’s Chiba Prefecture and trained at the MF Academy through the “Play Winter” program, a promising young athlete support initiative by the 2018 PyeongChang Foundation. Even after the “Play Winter” program ended, she continued to use MF Academy as her training base and will embark on this season’s challenges under the joint coaching system of Nakaniwa Gensuke from Japan and Park Bit-na from Korea.
Shin Jia expressed her excitement about the upcoming season, saying, “Thanks to the support of the ‘Play Winter’ program, it was my first time training overseas. I am really looking forward to the new season in this new environment.” She also stated, “I am working hard to prepare for the upcoming season. I will show a more improved and better performance with new programs compared to last year.”
