“There’s a situation where an athlete has a favorite jump and one they dislike. I would prescribe six mandatory jumps in the free program so that no one can avoid them.” Sergei Dudakov on rule changes

Sergei Dudakov, who works with Eteri Tutberidze’s team, spoke about the changes in figure skating rules. Here’s a translation of her comments.
“Balance must be present, without a doubt. For the next season, the number of jumps has been reduced to six, and a choreographic spin has been introduced. We talked and came to this conclusion: if it concerns the free program, there should be six jumps – axel, salchow, toe loop, loop, flip, and lutz. I would make these mandatory in the free program.
There’s a situation where an athlete has a favorite jump and one they dislike. For some, the lutz is very good, but they have trouble with the toe loop. There are also issues with the edge on the flip and lutz. I would prescribe six mandatory jumps in the free program so that no one can avoid them.
Currently, under our rules, we can compensate: if I don’t like the flip, I can replace it and compensate it with a quadruple. So, you can easily do without the flip. Bad edge? Please, polish it, refine your skill. Make sure it’s the correct inside edge. Can’t do a quad? Do a triple or learn the quad. As for combinations, I might leave them as they are – two or three,” Dudakov said.
