Yuma Kagiyama (21), competing in the World Team Trophy for the first time, is set to breake new ground in his final competition of the season. Here’s a translation of his comments posted on Nikkansports.
During the official practice Kagiyama worked on his jumps, including landing the quadruple flip, which he had announced he would be adding to his short program.
Regarding the upcoming event, Kagiyama shared, “I’ve watched this competition on TV before. Everyone seems to be having a lot of fun, especially with it being the last event of the season. I think I’ll be able to skate more freely compared to previous competitions,” he said with a smile.
He will also be taking on new challenges off the ice. As it is a team competition, he is expected to help boost team morale. However, he humorously admitted, “I’m not really an extroverted person…” hinting at his more reserved nature. Still, recalling the lively atmosphere of the World Team Trophy when he watched it on TV, he described it as “chaotic and fun.” Though he feels some nervousness, he vowed to do his best to energize the team, saying, “I’m anxious, but I’ll try my hardest.”
At last month’s World Championships, Kagiyama won a bronze medal but struggled in the free skate, finishing 10th. Reflecting on this, he said, “I don’t want to end the season with lingering frustration. I want to build confidence while enjoying the challenge and preparing for next season.”
