Retired Georgian figure skater Morisi Kvitelashvili spoke to “Match TV” about preparing for the World Team Trophy. Here’s a translation of his comments.

Kvitelashvili will compete in the World Team Trophy as part of team Georgia. The competition will take place in Tokyo from April 17 to April 20.

The Georgian skater retired from competitive skating in 2023. Kvitelashvili, who is 30 years old, is the 2020 European Championships bronze medalist. He previously trained with Eteri Tutberidze’s coaching group

Morisi Kvitelashvili: I knew in advance that Georgia might qualify for the World Team Trophy, but I was in limbo the whole time because nothing was certain. Only after the World Championships did it become clear that Georgia had earned enough points to be among the top six countries qualified to compete in the team event.

I’ve always wanted to participate in these competitions, but unfortunately, there wasn’t a team before, and we never had enough points. This season, the team did an incredible job — they managed to qualify for this important and prestigious competition. What’s particularly interesting is that the points were earned in each discipline by just one athlete. For other countries, points were collected by several athletes across disciplines.

This is also the first time in history that the Georgian team will compete at the World Team Trophy. I wanted to be part of this event, so I’m now doing my best to prepare, though the preparation has been very challenging. I retired from competitive sports two years ago, and my life is now entirely different from my athletic career. In March, I had to turn down some work and spend more time at training.

Until the very last day of preparation, we are deciding on the technical elements I’ll include in my programs, so I’m trying to train with my maximum technical content. Not everything is coming together, but I believe there’s still time, and I’m working hard to get back into decent competitive shape. I will perform with two of my old programs.”

When journalist asked Morisi whether this is a one-time return to the sport, he said: “Most likely, yes. I’m already tired, and figure skating has reached a new level that my body, given my abilities, health, and age, just can’t handle. As I started training again, my body began saying, “Don’t do this” (laughs). First, I pulled a muscle in my back on one side, then on the other. Then my neck got injured. And now I’m walking around with a black eye from a stye. Overall, as always with athletes, it’s never without some problems (laughs).”

He also shared his expectation from the event, saying “Of course, I hope to perform well and also enjoy the atmosphere, the country I’m traveling to, the competition itself, and the team spirit.”
