Olympic champion Alexei Yagudin criticized the ISU’s proposal to introduce separate technical and artistic programs in figure skating, calling it an admission of the organization’s inability to judge fairly. Here’s a translation of their comments.

Alexei Yagudin and Alexander Zhulin discussed possible innovations on the show “Katok.”

Yagudin: I’d rather watch those who try and go for quadruple jumps than watch skating – even if it’s meaningful, like with Kostner or Katarina Witt – but without any jumps.

Zhulin: Maybe that’s why they’re trying to create two programs? For example, let’s say Margarita Bazyluk comes out and wins the technical program against everyone. And Carolina Kostner wins the artistic program.

Yagudin: I’ve seen it. In one program, there are four jumps; in the other, none at all. This is the ISU admitting its own helplessness, that they can’t judge fairly. If they have to separate the jumpers from the skaters.

I would like to see more skating in skating. It’s supposed to artistic. Push the boundaries sure, but now that we know you can do a quad, let’s see expression of the music (THROUGHOUT) DICK Button: The program is the most important thing. I don’t even watch the men any more, unless Jason Brown is performing.
