Riku Miura (22) and Ryuichi Kihara (32) about winning silver at NHK Trophy and qualifying to the GP Final. Here’s a translation of their comments posted on Nikkansports.

After the performance, Kihara expressed his frustration, saying “We missed one pair spin. It feels like it can’t be helped. A missed pair spin was probably one of our biggest mistakes, but managing to recover properly after that, following yesterday’s short program, was really good, I think.”

“In terms of scoring, we managed to surpass our Skate America result of 136.44 points, so that was positive,’ added Miura.

“A good point was that even though we made mistakes, we didn’t crumble but were able to return to our usual techniques as we practiced, regaining our focus. That shows we’ve really grown. Of course, we did make mistakes, and in these two days of competition, there were two significant mistakes that really affected our ranking. So, both of us think that we truly need to work on these issues,” Ryuichi continued to analyze their performance.

“Yes. I was a bit nervous during the short program, but for today’s free program, I was able to calm my nerves and face the challenge, so I think the way I managed my feelings was good,” told Riku Miura.

They also shared that they couldn’t train as mush before this event. “I had a bit of a recurrence of back pain, or more an ongoing discomfort,” told Ryuichi. “Because of what happened last year, I became very cautious. I started feeling it just before Skate America and even had a doctor examine me during the event. The doctor suggested that it wasn’t bone-related but probably muscle fatigue. After returning to Japan, I had a thorough examination that confirmed there wasn’t any bone anomaly, which was a relief.”

As for advancing to the GP Finals, Kihara told: “Well… After Skate America, we took some rest and had to adjust our physical condition, which meant we had to reduce our practice volume. We still have some time until the Final, and since we’ve resolved the physical issues this time, I think it would be good if we could engage in intensive training leading up to the Final.”

“In the next competition, I hope to eliminate the mistakes we made this time. I plan to train hard for the remaining three weeks,” added Miura.
