2014 Olympic Champion in team event Ekaterina Bobrova believes that Guignard and Fabbri should have won at the Grand Prix in France. Here’s a translation of her comment.
Italian skaters Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri made a series of mistakes in the free dance at the Grand Prix event in Angers, France, and were beaten by the French team of Evgenia Lopareva and Geoffrey Brissaud, who train in Canada with Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon, and Romain Haguenauer.
“The Italians shouldn’t have lost. Everyone knows the inside scoop on ice dancing. There should have been a ‘generous’ second score that would have pulled them up, plus additional points for the other elements. And we come to a perfectly logical conclusion: the panel of judges was not theirs. That’s all. These things happen.
I know of a case in ice dance history where athletes were supposed to compete, were registered for it, but then when the coaches found out the panel of judges, they withdrew. Only because they understood that they would go there and, seeing the list of participants, they would lose to this one and that one. The story was pre-written.
But here, even if Barbara (Fusar-Poli, coach of the Italians – ed) knew the panel of judges, they couldn’t withdraw because there was no alternative event. Going back to the beginning of our discussion about them, I suspect they may have known the setup and therefore they were shaken. It’s not like losing to Chock and Bates in America, just hypothetically. It’s losing to the French, whom they should not be losing to.
Now, let’s step back and look at the bigger picture. The Montreal team has started extensive preparations for the Olympic Games, aiming to push all their three pairs onto the podium. Therefore, the Italians need to be pushed down because they are the main contenders for the top three in their home country. It’s ice dancing, what else can I say,” said Ekaterina Bobrova.
