Anna Frolova: “I mistreated my body during puberty so I’d rather not give any advice. I just want to remind all young girls that you are unique, love your body. Even if you’ve gained 2 or 3 kilos, it’s all solvable and over time it will pass.”

Russian single skater Anna Frolova (19) commented on competing with younger skaters and gave advice to young girls who are experiencing a period of rapid growth. Here’s a translation of her comments.

“What’s wrong with having incredible 15-16-year-old girls in the sport? Well, when you ask such questions, you probably expect me to say, ‘Yes, I’m glad, there should only be adults.’

But I myself was once a 15-year-old, a 16-year-old girl who competed at the Russian Nationals with the same Liza Tuktamysheva, my first Nationals. There were Sofia Samodurova and Stasya Konstantinova too. Many athletes were much older than me.

I can’t say that at that moment I thought, ‘I’m so young, it’s easier for me than for them!’ No. I was just as nervous, worked just as hard in training, and worried just the same. Perhaps, in terms of physicality in general, you might be able to work longer because you’re smaller, but that doesn’t separate anyone; it doesn’t mean that 15-16-year-old girls don’t work hard or that everything comes easily to them.

It’s all hard work. Everyone who competes gives themselves to this sport day and night. And I don’t want to say that it’s easier for someone else and that I’m happy to be an adult,” Frolova said.

“Perhaps I’m not the right person to ask for advice, as when I was 16, I injured myself and went through a fairly tough period in terms of growth and weight. Naturally, everyone goes through this, but the way I mistreated my body at that time means I’d rather not give any advice. I just want to remind all young girls that you are unique, love your body and accept it as it is — even if you’ve gained two or three kilograms, it’s all solvable and fixable, really, and over time it will pass,” Frolova said.
