Mao Shimada (16), a three-time World Junior Champion in women’s figure skating spoke to the media at the headquarters of her affiliate, Kinoshita Group, in Tokyo on March 13th. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Nikkansports.
After returning from Hungary on March 3, Shimada shared, “I didn’t step on the ice for about five days. I allowed myself to take a full break so I could return to training in a fresh state.”
Although age restrictions will prevent her from competing in the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics, Shimada is expected to make further strides next season. “I haven’t decided on the music for either my short program or free skate yet,” she revealed. “The choreography for the free skate is planned for May, and for the short program, around June.”
While the timing of their debut remains undecided, Shimada expressed her intent to experiment: “I’d like to use a classic, well-known piece of music that everyone recognizes.” This season, her SP was set to Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked, while her free skate was performed to Fragrance of the Window. “In recent years, I’ve often used music for my free skate that isn’t widely known or recognizable. I haven’t skated to a classic music piece for my free programs much before. I want to try performing to a story and music that everyone knows,” she said with a smile.
