Olympic figure skating champion in team event Ekaterina Bobrova and Russian ice dance champion Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva discussed the topic of weight in figure skating in the “Chempionat” podcast “Khod Konkom” (Skating Move). Here’s a translation of their comments.

Ekaterina Bobrova: In Russia, there has always been, let’s say, a gold standard. Female ice dancers were always expected to be in perfect shape. I don’t remember a single partner in Russia allowing herself to compete internationally while out of shape. The selection process even included weight as a criterion.

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: In Russia, if you’re out of shape, you don’t have a partner. The only one among us who had softer, rounder forms was Betina Popova. She always made it clear that she was keeping an eye on her physique. She was never super slim, but that didn’t stop her from performing her wonderful programs.

Ekaterina Bobrova: These days, no one pays attention to this except Russians. I look at weight purely from an aesthetical perspective. For example, it’s strange if the boy is smaller than the girl. But in single skating, as long as it doesn’t interfere with skating properly — like executing rotations cleanly — it’s fine.”
