Choreographer Nikita Mikhailov, in a conversation with Sport24 journalist Konstantin Lesik, spoke about the principles of his French colleague Benoit Richaud, who also creates programs for Russian figure skaters. Here’s a translation of his comment.

“He choreographs programs in 3-4 days and leaves. Then the coach tells me: ‘Please have a look, maybe you could add something, give your opinion.’ I give my professional opinion where certain things could be done, to which the child says: ‘But Benoit told me not to change anything’. I say: ‘But here you have few movements, here you’re just rushing to do stroking, we could add something else’ — ‘No, Benoit said not to change anything’.

I’ve heard that Benoit signs an agreement with either the coach or the federation, that if anything changes in the program, he immediately removes his name from the list of choreographers. From a creative point of view, this is wrong: you create a program in three days, it doesn’t mean it should stay the same for the whole season. Creativity, after all, is a more flexible thing. I do not support such a format.

With Sokolovskaya’s group, we change something under my supervision: Svetlana Vladimirovna calls, I come immediately. With the guys from St. Petersburg – they change something themselves. But, of course, it’s still for the better, I don’t have such problems, like Benoit (laughs),” said Mikhailov.
