Skate America 2016: ladies short program fashion review
Grand-prix has started and I’m super excited to discuss costumes. Today I’m sharing my opinion about ladies’ dresses for the short program.
Serafima Sakhanovich
I like simplicity in figure skating costumes, but simplicity should look elegant. In case with Serafima’s dress, it looks too simple, like a training dress. Especially with this pony tail hairdo. She needs to think how to make her look more chic and memorable. Maybe, a nice hairdo can help?
Angelina Kuchvalska
Well, at least she tried to think of something different than “typical figure skating dress”. But I don’t like the translucent part on her belly and with a lot of pleasure I’d remove this shining diamond from her belly button.
Mai Mihara
Lovely dress, totally age appropriate. Dark blue is a good choice for classical program. I like laces on the neckline and finishing on the waist. Maybe this dress isn’t very memorable or outstanding, but it suits her and her program. The only thing, I’d also prefere a nice hairstyle instead of ponytail. Come on, you’re skating at senior level at big competition why not to try to look more elegant?
Kanako Murakami
Wow! No black and red combination for Carmen! I appreciate it a lot) I like the top of the dress, it look interesting and flirty. But the skirts spoils an impression a bit. I don’t like that top and skirt are made of different fabric and different colors. They’re a bit mismatched. I’d prefer a heavier and not translucent skirt for this dress.
Mariah Bell
What a lovely dress! And totally in style of the music and program. Love the skirt with trim, it always looks so good and playful in motion. Great choice for this program. I like silver color, but it’d look better under the spotlights. I would also suggest some hair accessory in style of 20-30th.
Roberta Rodeghiero
Pretty simple, elegant little black dress. It’s always a good and safe choice. I like the moderate amount of sequins, beautiful flowery application on the neckline – the thing that made this dress. I wish the skirt was a little bit longer, and I’d gladly remove the gloves.
Gabrielle Daleman
Usually I’m not a fan of such “rich” dresses with massive rhinestones and sequins. But every rule has an exception. The reason why this dress worked for me is that it’s a good example of my rule: always chose something one – either interesting cut, or selfsufficient color, or lots of finishing. Gabriella’s bet was finishing on laconic black dress. And Gabriella looked fantastic!
Mao Asada
Someone may say that Mao’s dress has too much nude illusion and look provocative. But Mao is 26, she’s a mature woman and she can wear a dress as provocative as she wants) I like this dress, it suits choreography and music, such a dark swan. I also want to point that nude illusion mesh is very well chosen, hairdo and make-up were gorgeous!
So Youn Park
I don’t know why, but this dress reminded me of Kim Yuna and it’s definately a good sign. It’s what I call chic little black dress, chic in it’s laconicism. Fantastic finishing with golden sequins on the bodice. The dress has an expensive look and I also liked the bracelet.
Gracie Gold
For sure it wasn’t an easy task to sew the dress not worse than last season’s dress for tango. I think this dress is interesting and more mature. Despite plunging neckline the dress doesn’t look vulgar. I also want to praise Gracie that she as always paid attention to her hairdo, makeup and accessories.
Ashley Wagner
No need to say many words. This dress has it all! The glam, sass, sparkle! Stylish, memorable, sexy. I’m not sure about bright blue underlayer, I think I’d remove it, but still it was the dress of the night!

I hate to be picky, but you keep using the word laconic, when perhaps you mean iconic–as in the well known and classic little black dress makes it an iconic fashion statement.
But I love your reviews and agree with them. Everyone looks very elegant.
Sorry for my English, it’s far far away from even good. I use the word ‘laconic’ when I want to point that the dress / costume doesn’t have much details or finishing. Maybe I should use another word?
Your wording is fine. If you really feel like you’re repeating yourself, try “simple”.
I like the idea of Ashley’s costume, but I feel like it’s a little overstated to be honest. To me, the sexiest costumes are the subtle ones. But she looks good, and I think it will grow on me as the season goes on.
Gracie looks classy. I’m not sure about the crisscrossing in the back, but she’s a beautiful girl and can wear pretty much anything :)
I love Mai’s and Gabrielle’s dresses.
Usually I’m not a fan of such appliques on the dress, but Gabrielle dress for the sp is great!
Gabrielle’s dress is gorgeous. The appliqué isn’t overdone, and black always looks classy on the ice.
Ashley hit the roof that night! About Gracie’s dress, it didn’t impress me much. Maybe it’s because black color makes look older, and she is so young and beautiful girl.:)
