Coach Alexander Zhulin agreed with Evgeni Plushenko’s view that judges tend to support leading skaters, including at the Russian Nationals, and noted this is a common trend internationally. Here’s a translation of his comments.

Earlier, two-time Olympic champion Plushenko stated that the scores for Adeliia Petrosian and Petr Gumennik “should have been more down-to-earth to avoid unpleasant surprises at the Olympics.”

“I think Zhenya is really right on this issue. Petr and Adeliia were indeed given a kind of carte blanche. We must not forget that soon they will be skating at the Olympics, so this might be the right decision. There’s no need to give Western media a reason to make a fuss about Russian skaters receiving low scores.

I see a similar trend now in America, Canada, and other countries. Judges everywhere support the leaders with great enthusiasm. Figure skating is quite a subjective sport. At the same time, I don’t think it’s right to criticize the judges for this. They’re just doing their job,” Zhulin said.

Everyone has their own opinion after all. I think Muravieva did a great job at nationals, I loved to watch her skate.
