Gleb Smolkin, representing Georgia in ice dance with Diana Davis, was surprised by the judging at the Finland Grand Prix. His comments were reported by Sports journalist Maya Bagriantseva. Here’s a translation.
“Not everything went well in our rhythm dance – I made a mistake on the twizzles. But we’re generally satisfied with the rest of the program. I think we managed to improve in some aspects compared to previous competitions. We changed part of the music and some moments in the program – it seems we have more energy and are skating faster. After the event in America, we realized we needed to pay special attention to turns, since the levels depend on them.
But we don’t understand what’s happening with the scores today. I lost three levels on the twizzle section, even though I was only missing one rotation. Almost all our elements today were given level one, plus we got an exclamation mark in the step sequence in the protocol – and our coaches still haven’t figured out what the issue is. Of course, we’re upset. The judging was incredibly strict for everyone today. I hope our coaches can get some explanations from the judges after the competition. For now, no one understands anything,” Smolkin said.
