Nikita Volodin, who has represented Germany in figure skating since 2023 with partner Minerva Fabienne Hase, shared his experience of receiving German citizenship, a crucial step toward competing in the Olympics. Here’s a translation of his comments.
“Actually, I received my citizenship three weeks ago. After passing the language exam, they scheduled the naturalization procedure almost immediately. The paperwork was processed very quickly.
On August 21, I participated in a small ceremony where I took the oath, signed all the necessary documents, and officially became a citizen of Germany. My partner Minerva was with me – she seemed even more nervous than I was. She likes everything to be very precise, and this whole citizenship process made her quite anxious. So she was, of course, incredibly happy once it was done. She was also shocked to see me in a suit – she had never seen me looking so formal before.”
Although Volodin hasn’t yet received the physical passport, he mentioned, “They’ve promised to send it within a week, as it’s not a quick process. However, I’ve already been issued my German ID – an ausweis.”
Reflecting on the milestone, Volodin said, “After the ceremony, I immediately sent photos to our family group chat and to our coaches – I wanted to make everyone happy and show them that all obstacles have been overcome. The path to the Olympics is now open, and we can focus peacefully on preparing.”
