Estonian figure skater Mihhail Selevko is preparing for the World Championships in Boston, overcoming various health issues. Here’s a translation of his comments posted on ERR.
Following his seventh-place finish at the European Championships in front of a home audience, Mihhail Selevko struggled with a viral illness for several weeks, forcing him to withdraw from the Olympic test event in Milan.
“This time, Mihhail was sick after the European Championships and wasn’t able to train for three weeks,” coach Irina Kononova told ERR. “Because of that, his preparation was very difficult and not as planned, but now we’re starting to get back into shape.”
Although the viral illness has subsided, Selevko continues to be troubled by his left leg, which has been causing pain during jumps since the start of the season. The discomfort persists daily.
“Unfortunately, the pain is constant — even when walking,” admitted Selevko. “I’ve been using medication, and it got a bit better during the Oslo competition, but the pain is definitely still there. However, I’m working with my sports doctor and physiotherapist, and I hope this situation improves.”
At the World Championships, Mihhail Selevko hopes to place in the top ten, which would secure two spots for Estonia in the men’s singles event at next year’s Olympics. “I’ve started working with a psychologist, and I feel mentally more prepared,” he said. “I hope to show that progress during the competition.”
The Estonian champion will fly to Boston on Monday, ten days before his event. “Of course, it’s for acclimatization and adapting to a new environment. There will be many figure skaters there preparing for the World Championships, and I think training with them will be very motivating and beneficial,” he explained.
“It’s not the first time I’ve skated on a narrower rink, so I hope it won’t be an issue,” Selevko commented on the different sizes of the American ice rink.
