Nikolaj Memola: “When I need inspiration for my own skating, I watch women’s programs rather than men’s. They’re more consistent, and it’s more enjoyable to watch. We guys are always messing up and delivering imperfect skates.”

Nikolaj Memola (21) won silver at the 2025 European Championships. Italian skater scored a total of 262.61 points. Here’s a translation of her comments reported by Sports journalist Maya Bagriantseva.
“Nikolaj Memola: Today, I felt so much joy on the ice. It was the best skate of my life — this was the first time I managed to land two quadruple lutzes and win a medal at the European Championships. It’s a huge achievement.
I am so grateful to my mom, who found the right words for me today. It has indeed been a tough week, but now I feel incredible.
Our Italian team is very strong. It’s great to be here with Matteo (Rizzo), and though we don’t have Corey (Circhelli) with us, he is also part of our team. We miss him. We wanted him to come, but he’s not here. So I’ll take this chance to tease him: Corey, bro, where are you? We’re waiting for you at the party tonight! Where are you?
Honestly, I’m just incredibly happy.”
“I love watching figure skating competitions. But I’ve noticed that when I need inspiration for my own skating, I watch women’s programs rather than men’s. They’re more consistent, and it’s more enjoyable to watch. We guys are always messing up and delivering imperfect skates.
Just the other day, I was watching a small competitions in Russia – Lena Kostyleva was competing there, who landed a triple axel, a quadruple toe loop, and two quadruple salchows in one program. Do you see what I mean? It’s incredible. I told myself, okay, if she can do it, you probably should pull yourself together too. Besides, those jumps are in the first half of your program, Nicolaj. So go for it. This helped me a lot.
This morning, I almost entirely watched the women’s event from the 2022 European Championships. Sasha Trusova was performing a quadruple salchow-triple toe loop combination there, and it was her second-to-last jumping element in her program. Tell me, then, why can’t I land this combination at the start of my program? Thanks to the girls for the inspiration,” said Memola, whose words are conveyed by Sports’ correspondent Maya Bagriantseva.
