Marin Honda: “In my program, I wanted to convey the theme of the light and shadow of my skating life.”

“I’ve been skating since I was two, and I’ve always had skating at the center of my life. This year marks the final year of my student life. With gratitude for my own feelings and those who support me, I want to cherish each competition and performance,” said Marin finishing 12th at the Tokyo Championships (September 21-24) which serve as the qualifiers for the Japanese Nationals.
Continuing the topic of being in her last year of college, Marin said “Many people retire after graduating from college, I think. So, there are two options for continuing beyond that: either end it when you feel satisfied, or keep going. Within myself, I’ll decide how far I want to push. It’s become the time for me to think about what I want to do and my dreams after retiring from the sport. I hope you all look forward to it.”
Speaking about her short program for this season to Alan Walker’s “Faded” choreographed by Shae-Lynn Bourne, Marin shared “Shae-Lynn is someone I greatly respect, both for her choreographic talent and her personality. She’s my favorite choreographer, and I wanted to convey the theme of ‘the light and shadow of my skating life’ for this program, which I shared with her and and she created choreography. This short program is a reflection of my skating and myself. I chose this music to express a range of complex emotions, not necessarily happiness, but rather a bit of sadness and various mixed feelings. I skate the program where my emotions can deeply resonate, putting my feelings about skating since I was young into the music.”
As for her free program to the “The Little Mermaid”, Marin told “I was initially practicing my free program from last season, but I wanted to skate to the music from ‘The Little Mermaid.’ I’ve known the animated movie since I was a child, and I watched the recent movie. I could immediately imagine what kind of performance I could deliver when I thought about it. I thought of the music combination in my head and quickly envisioned myself skating in competition.”
Marin Honda started this season with a score of 41.80 points and 17th place after the for SP but she opened up to accept the disappointment. “Compared to when I was younger, I feel that my weaknesses become much more apparent when it comes to competitions, and my confidence wavers. Despite having experienced many competitions, every time, there’s a unique feeling that can only be experienced in the competition. It’s a battle with myself,” she reflected.
As for her goals for the season Marin mentioned, “My goal is to perform this free program in front of a large audience at the Japanese Nationals and finish it with a smile. I will do my best to achieve this goal.”
