During the appearance on “BeS Comments” program on Youtube Channel, Evgenia Medvedeva shared her opinion on the attitude of young figure skaters towards training. Here’s the translation of her comment.
“In my interviews, people often ask, ‘Evgenia, you’ve been training from an early age. You must have always wanted to go to the rink.’ People want to hear that lyrical story, that in childhood, I bought skates and dreamed of becoming a world champion, an Olympic champion.
But I tell people, ‘No, I was made to do it. My mother used to drag me to the rink every day.’ It continued until I was 14, until I grew older and truly understood that I really wanted and needed it.
This became my life. First, I didn’t see anything else. Second, I realized that this was my path – there was no turning back. And I wanted it myself. Since I was already here and succeeding, why not?
But every time I tell people that a child doesn’t want to spend hours on the ice and struggle with triple jumps but prefers playing on the playground with peers, eating sand and dirt from the sandbox, they widen their eyes and ask, ‘How do champions emerge?’
For that, there is already the Russian school and the Soviet school. To nurture champions,” said the two-time world champion in her show “Without Comments” on YouTube channel.
