“I believe many people bet on Loena Hendrickx because she is more experienced and has shown quite stable skating. But the nerves let her down. It happens in sports.” Medvedeva about European Championships

Do you follow the international figure skating competitions: the European Championships, the Four Continents Championships?
Evgenia Medvedeva: I not only follow international competitions but also comment on them. I did not comment on the Four Continents Championships because I had a time conflict with other pre-planned activities, so I could not.
As for the European Championships, it would be strange to say that they turned out to be super strong. Without our athletes, the scores were significantly lower, but it had its own drama and joy. And in fact, the girl who represented Georgia won, but at the same time, she trains in St. Petersburg, and she has skated for Russia for many years. It was interesting to watch.
Was Anastasia Gubanova’s victory at the European Championships obvious to you?
Evgenia Medvedeva: I believe many people bet on Loena Hendrickx because she is more experienced and has shown quite stable skating. But the nerves let her down. It happens in sports.
Do you think it will be difficult for her at the World Championships because she is Russian?
Evgenia Medvedeva: I think yes. But it seems to me that the fact that she is from Russia will not be the most decisive factor in her worries. It will be difficult for her because she won the European Championships and something is already expected of her. The World Championships is a more serious competition, and there will be more rivals—Japanese, Americans. There will be more pressure on her; everyone will react: “Come on, confirm your status!” Let’s see how she copes.
