Mikhail Kolyada returned to the “Nutcracker” SP inspired by Baryshnikov
Mikhail Kolyada returned to the “Nutcracker” short program for the Olympic season. Alexei Mishin and choreographer Ilia Averbukh commented on new old program.
Alexei Mishin: Ilia Averbukh choreographed a short program for Misha. We involved a number of specialists to emphasize the specifics and traditions of the St. Petersburg ballet school. We dedicate this program to Mikhail Baryshnikov, the great representative of the St. Petersburg ballet. The style of the program is largely formed on the basis of Baryshnikov’s ballet plastics.
Since the beginning of the season, we have tested several versions of the short program, but at present his program is “The Nutcracker”, because the plastic of moves that corresponds to Tchaikovsky’s music is the most interesting and unusual for Mikhail.

Ilia Averbukh: We have been working on the short program for a long time, now it has been brought to the required level and it seems to me that it has shone with all the colors. Everyone remembers last year’s free program dedicated to Nureyev. We decided to continue this (ballet) story.
I cannot say that we show the movements of Mikhail Baryshnikov on ice, a great dancer, whose Nutcracker is amazing, but Kolyada’s program is inspired by Baryshnikov’s work, its breathing, plasticity formed the basis of our program. Misha Kolyada himself is very choreographic, beautiful and aesthetic on the ice, and, of course, such artistic images suit him very much. Our “Nutcracker” is a collective image, two beginnings in one person.
