Alexei Mishin: Biased assessment of “fully rotated – under rotated” jumps deprived Samodurova of a real fourth place

Alexei Mishin about Sofia Samodurova’s performance at NHK Trophy 2019 and Elizaveta Tuktamysheva’s jumps.

Alexei Mishin: Taking into account how this season started and also taking into account the dynamics of growing up, I positively asses Sonya’s performances at both Grand Prix events. Here, at the Grand Prix in Japan, she did not allow a single breakdown, however, I believe that the biased assessment of “fully rotated – under rotated” deprived her of a real fourth place. The strictness of the judges to her jumps can be explained by the fact that the native walls were supposed to help Japanese ladies, who, in the opinion of many experts, were not quite right ahead of her. Because in terms of infallibility, she is simply unique, and in terms of emotionality and charisma – it’s “A”.

Alexei Mishin:I think that now, if we talk about Liza [Tuktamysheva] and those strongest athletes who performed here [at the Grand Prix in Japan], then, probably, those who have a quadruple jump or at least a triple axel have the greatest prospects. Because even flawless and highly artistic skating without these elements does not allow you to place higher.

Speaking about what happened in China, I must say that Liza is distinguished by perfect landings of her jumps, while some of her rivals during their whole career have a “label” of under rotated jumps. But, of course, we all understand that it is difficult to get into the Final by failing the short program twice. In general, our girls (Tuktamysheva and Samodurova) did well.
