Bestemianova: Stepanova and Bukin were the best, why no one sees it?

An Olympic Champion Natalia Bestemianova commented on the result of the Russian ice dance duo Alexandra Stepanova – Ivan Bukin at Grand Prix Cup of China (3rd place):

Alexandra and Ivan were the best, and I don’t understand why no one sees it? It’s ice dances, which implies the relationship between a man and a woman.

The winners Shibutanies showed an interpretation of the music, wonderful modern dance, but not a duo, not a relationships between a man and a woman. Their skating also lacked speed.

Weaver and Poje showed real beautiful dance. But Stepanova and Bukin still were the best.

It’s time to stop the rat races, while our duets are fighting with each other, the foreigners win. I believe now is time to bet on a duet who can compete at this and next Olympics. I’m talking about Stepanova and Bukin.

Haha, why Russian ice dance is so funny? It’s almost like to watch a Brazilian soap opera)

Is she kidding? I don’t know where to start with what’s wrong with this. Her criterion that ice dancing is about “relationship between man and woman,” is absurd. Dancing can encompass many ideas and concepts; it doesn’t always have to be sexual or romantic. Also, Steph/Buk have some of the poorest lines in ice dancing among the top couples. One reviewer labeled their style as “clunky.” They may improve in time, but to suggest they are WC or Olympic podium-worthy as they skate now is a major eye roller. I know she skated with his father (full disclosure: B/B were probably my least favorite Russian ice dance team of all time), so maybe she is showing some misplaced nepotism. Geez, what is she smoking?

Oh, just Russian National Championships is soon and they have four duo who are in conversation, plus Zahorski/Guerreiro. Three spots to European Championships and only two for the World Championships. It’s very likely that those two teams who’ll go to this WC will also go to Olympics next season. So the race starts now….

I agree with Natalia, they are really good and always undermarked

I compleatly agree with Natalia. But it’s still difficult for me to chose between Stepanova-Bukin and Weaver-Poje. The Shibutani just skate and don’t dance at all.
