“There were only two clean skates. It’s not interesting to watch. They’re not doing ultra-C elements, not doing triple axels, not doing quads. They’re only doing elements that have been performed for a hundred years.” Tarasova on women’s SP at the Europeans

Tatiana Tarasova stated that the level of European figure skating is declining without Russian athletes, citing a lack of technical difficulty and clean performances at the recent European Championships. Here’s a translation of her comments.

On Wednesday, January 14th, the women’s short programs took place at the European Championships in Sheffield. Nina Petrokina of Estonia leads, followed by Belgian Nina Pinzarrone in second, and Italian Anna Pezzetta in third.

“I don’t remember a European Championships where, except for two girls, everyone failed all their jump elements. This is a lack of preparation. They’re not doing ultra-C elements in the short program, not doing triple axels, not doing quads. They’re only doing elements that have been performed for a hundred years.

These women’s short programs prove that the Russian Nationals are stronger than the European Championships. Our girls skate more interesting programs. I think it’s fair to say that the level of European figure skating is degrading without us. For many years, we had three girls who always adorned the women’s events.

And now, out of all the girls – however many there are – there were only two clean skates. It’s not interesting to watch,” Tarasova said.

  1. Susab says:

The Russians are just not interesting to watch. They just skate back and forth, then jump. Figure skating should include beauty, like dance. The Russians don’t do that. I enjoy watching skating so much more without them.

  2. M says:

The exclusion from international competition must really bother them, that they can’t stop talking about such a mediocre (their words) event.

  3. Skatefan says:

Most of the Russians were just emaciated girls jumping up and down in one place. No one cares about rotations when the jumps look so sloppy.

  4. Rachel Bordeaux says:

I hope we can see Kamila Valieva skate competitively on the world stage once again.

  5. Mary A Virnig says:

The World feed on peacock mentioned that the ice was too soft in the beginning programs and that they had to open the doors from outside so that the ice would get harder for the next group. So I think that probably had a lot to do with it

  6. Trish Aparicio says:

They cheat. I’d rather see skaters that look healthy than the emaciated wraiths doing quads at 14 that can’t walk without pain by 18. It’s not that hard to understand.

  7. Mary B-MacL says:

Not one hundred years. More like, 60 years
Janet Lynn competed a triple jump mid 1960,s

  8. Brad says:

Karma = you cheat, in this case DOPING, by the Russians, you’re disqualified.

  9. Edgardo Pelagio says:

These women don’t do doping, that is why.

  10. Wow says:

I agree Tarasova I cannot watch figure skating without Russia being involved only Japan comes close and when Eteri introduces thing new things people are angry because she knows how to keep us entertained others must learn or expand.

  11. Wow says:

“For a 100 years” wow straightforward but true.

  12. auntie tat says:

the world outside of russia is not interested in teenage girls jumping quads only because they are physically mentally emotionally immature who lack experience, grace femininity we value the complete package
