South Korean figure skater Ahsun Yun achieved a season-best score in her NHK Trophy short program, demonstrating adaptability and determination despite a tight competition schedule. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on MFocus.

In the mixed zone, Yun commented, “I made a mistake on my first jump, so I’m a bit disappointed. But today isn’t the end – there’s another competition tomorrow, so I’ll focus more and show a better performance.” Reflecting on her skate, she added, “I felt my shortcomings more than my strengths today. Still, I tried to enjoy myself and approached it with the mindset of doing my best.”

There was a change in her planned elements that day. “You never know what will happen in competition, so I always practice various plan Bs. That way, if I make a mistake, I can make up for it elsewhere,” Yuna remarked.

Regarding her back-to-back Grand Prix appearances, she said, “I didn’t expect to be invited to NHK, so I’m happy to have another great experience after Canada.” On the physical demands of consecutive competitions, she added, “It was hard to manage my condition perfectly since I had to start training again right after returning, but rather than worrying about stamina, I approached it with the mindset of trusting myself and taking on the challenge.”

In the free program she performed to the musical “Les Miserables” soundtrack. Combining her short program score of 61.51 with a free skate score 118.72 points she got and a total of 180.23 points, finishing seventh.

After her skate, Ahsun Yun said in the mixed zone, “I’m happy I succeeded with the lutz–toe loop that I missed yesterday. There were some mistakes in the second half, but I did my best until the end,” smiling. Reflecting on her two Grand Prix events, she added, “I feel a lot more relieved now. Today isn’t the last competition – I’ll work on my weaknesses and prepare for the upcoming ranking event.”

Yun, who has been actively competing in the Grand Prix series, is also a senior in high school preparing for university entrance exams. On balancing studies and training, she said, “The exams are over, and I’m just waiting for the results. It was tough having interviews in Canada, but I’m hoping for good news,” she said with a shy smile. Regarding the physical demands of consecutive competitions, she added, “It was hard to adjust my condition perfectly since I had to start training right after returning, but rather than worrying about stamina, I focused on trusting myself and taking on the challenge.”

When asked by a foreign journalist about her use of plan B in the short program, Yun explained, “You never know what will happen in competition, so I always practice various alternatives to make up for mistakes.” Asked about how she started skating, she said, “I first went to the ice rink at age seven and loved the feeling of skating. I was so happy in that moment, and that’s what brought me here.” As for her strengths, she cited “steadiness, perseverance, and a strong will to work hard without giving up.”
