Tatiana Tarasova discusses the strengths and challenges faced by Guillaume Cizeron and Laurence Fournier Beaudry after their gold medal win at the Grand Prix France, reflecting on their Olympic potential and praising their unique artistry. Here’s a translation of her comments.
French ice dancers Guillaume Cizeron and Laurence Fournier Beaudry secured gold at the Grand Prix France, marking their first victory as a pair in an international event. Despite their strong showing, esteemed coach Tatiana Tarasova shared mixed thoughts on their Olympic potential during an interview.
“I’m not convinced they’ll win the Olympics,” Tarasova says
“I don’t think they’ll win the Olympic Games in Milan. We need to carefully watch their competitors,” Tarasova began, expressing skepticism about their chances for gold at the 2026 Olympics.
However, she did not hold back in her praise of their artistry. “Their free dance was a divine gift to all of us. No one has skated like this, no one is skating like this now, and no one will be able to skate like this for the foreseeable future. Everything they did was truly unique – only they are capable of it. Some individual elements can be performed by others, but the entire package, the complete performance, is exclusively theirs.”
While recognizing their technical and artistic brilliance, Tarasova noted areas for growth heading into the Olympics. “Perhaps they’ll continue to improve before the Games. Their rhythm dance didn’t strike me as innovative compared to the free program – it needs work, and they’re fully capable of transforming it. Their technical perfection and extraordinary mastery are undeniable.”
“Their performance was a statement for the Olympic podium,” Tarasova adds
Tarasova also commented on the significance of their Grand Prix victory and its implications for the Olympic season.
“Can their performance be seen as a statement for an Olympic podium finish? It certainly can,” Tarasova said with confidence. “I’m always delighted when remarkable athletes make a comeback. Guillaume is an outstanding dancer. He decided to return and made it happen. I agree with the judges – there was no competition when it came to their free dance.”
Tarasova was particularly struck by the quality of their performance, calling it singular and unmatched. “Their skate was unique, and the dance was unique. I’m grateful to them for making it so clear who was first and who was the best – it left no room for doubt.”
